Dr. Martin: Well, good morning everyone. Today should be a great day. You know why? It’s International Coffee Day, that’s why. Guess [00:00:30] what we’re talking about this morning? Good to have you on with us this morning. I’m going to give you at least nine reasons, and probably 10, to switch your vitamin C. If you’re taking the other vitamin C, ascorbic acid, I want you to switch to coffee, the real vitamin C. Now, there’s a lot of people on and I want to talk about why on International [00:01:00] Coffee Day you should switch your vitamin C. I don’t know, were you think I was kidding about the true vitamin C is not in a capsule? True vitamin C is when you are drinking coffee. I take it black, I want to tell you about my little journey with coffee. I want to show you how you can adapt.
[00:01:30] When I was a teenager, my grandmother and my mother used to percolate coffee. Oh, the smell of coffee. Oh, I love that smell. My mom wouldn’t let me drink it when I was younger, but my grandma did because my grandma never said no. I remember putting milk and probably about four sugars when I first started drinking coffee, and then I remember [00:02:00] in grade 13 where I went down to a half a teaspoon of sugar in my coffee. It all had to do with my dad who found out he was a diabetic, and then I understood the importance of cutting back on sugar just watching my father. Then I evolved to half a cream in my coffee with no [00:02:30] sugar, and a lot of times they put too much cream in there. For years. If you went through the drive-through to get a coffee at Tim Horton’s or whatever, they’d make a mistake and they put a little bit of sugar in there. I said, “No, no, no, just a half a cream.”
You know what that I finally said? I finally said, “That’s it. I’m drinking coffee black.” In my days of practice I had some folks that would bring me a peace offering [00:03:00] and bring me a coffee, a regular whatever, I couldn’t drink it. If there was even a little bit of sugar, I couldn’t drink it. I just learned to love black coffee. That’s me, but the moral of the story is you can change habits. It takes you three weeks. Now, getting back to coffee, three weeks to form a habit. That’s just me watch psychology as I learned in university. [00:03:30] It takes three weeks to form a habit. The gyms are full in January and empty in February because people think, “Oh, I didn’t know it was going to be hard.” Anything you do in life that’s worthwhile is not easy. Now look, I don’t want you to put milk in your coffee. If you’re going to use dairy, use the cream in your coffee because that has no carbohydrates, no sugars. Use cream, not milk, and no added sugar [00:04:00] or you’re defeating the purpose of your coffee.
There’s a lot of reasons, and I’m going to get into that, and this is all research for, but I want to say this so that you understand where I’m coming from. See this face here? I have been consistent. Consistent. Yesterday we talked about red meat? I’ve never changed my tune. Always, always was for red meat. From the days in the 1970s [00:04:30] when I took 2000 hours of nutrition, you find out that unless you’re in the animal kingdom you’re not getting a lot of those vitamins. If you’re a vegetarian or a vegan, sorry, you’re wrong. You’re wrong. The world might tell you you’re right, but you’re wrong. I’m sorry. It’s the same thing with coffee. Even if you Google it this morning I’m sure you will get lots of gurus telling you that coffee’s not good for you. It’s acidic. [00:05:00] No, it’s not.
The coffee bean is acidic, but when you drink coffee it turns your body alkaline. Yes. Unless you have sugar in it, because your body’s smart. It’s a tremendous nutrient, and I’ve been saying it as long as I’ve been in practice, 46 years, I’ve never changed my tune and [00:05:30] research is saying that I was right all along. So, drink your java. Drink your coffee. If you don’t like it, I feel sorry for you. I do. Some people drink tea. Why would you drink tea when you can drink coffee? I just don’t get it, but that’s all right. That’s all right. Okay, so let’s go through the reasons. Coffee [00:06:00] has several compounds in it, polyphenols. You know what poly is? Poly means lots of phenols. You know what phenols are? They’re compounds that are very, very good for you.
You find them in fruits and vegetables. Polyphenols. The thing is with coffee, they’re in a concentrated form. Very high. [00:06:30] This is why I tell you you do not need… Because a lot of people are asking me, “Doc, when I eat eggs, meat, and cheese for a month on the reset, what am I going to do for vitamin C?” It’s a good question. Ascorbic acid, you don’t need it if you drink coffee because you’re getting much more than vitamin C, you’re getting all the polyphenols. You see, I did this in a previous podcast but I’ll [00:07:00] just repeat it… Vitamin C looks like sugar, by the way, did you know that, structurally? If you’re taking a supplement of vitamin C and yet you’re eating sugar, your body will pee out the vitamin C to keep the sugar. It’s losing its effectiveness.
I just want to say this: in practice, I never gave anybody vitamin C. You guys hear me all the time. If you were in my office and one of my patients [00:07:30] over the 46 years, you never said, “Well, here Dr. Martin, how much vitamin C should I take?” And I say, “Do you drink coffee? You don’t need it. It replaces it.” Now, wot only does it replace it, it’s far superior. Listen, one little asterisk. Okay? One little disclaimer. I like vitamin C therapy for cancer. Getting it intravenously [00:08:00] in a very high dose intravenously, I like that. I’m not against that therapy, but if you just take a vitamin C capsule, why wouldn’t you drink a coffee? It’s much better for you. You’re going to absorb it much better because it is so complex.
Here’s another nutrient that’s in it, a compound. Have you heard of quercetin? Quercetin is with a Q, not with a K. [00:08:30] Quercetin. Now, quercetin got some ink during COVID. You heard about zinc, right? And we talked about that. How do you get zinc? In vitamin S, steak. Highest source of zinc is in steak. It’s not in the plant kingdom. It’s not there, so don’t fool yourself. You need zinc, and zinc is found in steak, so eat your steak. Quercetin, and they found this out during [00:09:00] COVID, acts like the drug hydroxychloroquine. You remember that malarial drug? What was it? I can’t remember what journal, the medical journal. They got into trouble because they published the study that showed hydroxychloroquine was no good for COVID, it actually gave you side effects on your heart.
They got caught, and [00:09:30] I talked to you about that in a previous podcast. They lied because they were so upset. So upset. Number one, that Donald Trump mentioned it as something they should take for COVID. They got really upset, not only that, but the other drug that they were suggesting you take was $1000 a dose, and hydroxychloroquine, the [00:10:00] malarial drug, was $0.65 a dose. Why? Because the patent had run out many, many, many, many years. It had been used for 65 years I think, and the patent runs out so the pharmaceutical companies aren’t making any money on it. Well, they’re making some money, but not big money. They had these doctors, so-called researchers, poo-poo the idea of using the malarial drug. Within a [00:10:30] nanosecond, within a month, some researchers went after that journal and the other researchers and said, “You guys lied, you cook the books.”
They had to do a disclaimer and they had to recant it, all the study, because they were fudged. It was a little bit of news, but it should have been huge news. They lied. They were so uptight because they get [00:11:00] paid by the pharmaceutical companies. That’s exactly what happened. Any who, you know what acts like hydroxychloroquine? Quercetin. I’ll talk about quercetin, but I won’t tell you necessarily go get a supplement of it. I have it in my blood booze, but you can drink it. There’s quercetin in here, and that drives zinc inside your cells. What does zinc do? Zinc [00:11:30] builds your immune system. You don’t have to get a supplement of zinc either.
Now, over the years I put some people on zinc. If you’re a vegetarian or a vegan, I put people on zinc because they don’t get it in their diet, but I’d rather you eat your zinc and drink your vitamin C, your quercetin. I’m pretty passionate about it, aren’t I? No, because you have to understand, for years and years and years I was told [00:12:00] when I would do seminars, I’d do conferences for doctors, “Oh, Dr. Martin. You’re stupid. You’re a Neanderthal. You’re a dinosaur. Coffee can’t be good for you.” Yes, it can. Okay, so replace your vitamin C if you’re taking vitamin C as a supplement. People ask me online, they go, “Doc, how much vitamin C should I give my kid?” Well, you can’t give them coffee. Don’t give them vitamin C, [00:12:30] give them vitamin D. Their vitamin C, mostly they’re just going to pee it out. It’s poorly absorbed in a supplement form. Don’t drink orange juice for vitamin C, please. Don’t listen to those commercials.
Now, here’s the tremendous benefit of coffee. If you have it before a meal or during a meal, you know what it does? It acts just like Metformin. You know what Metformin [00:13:00] is? It’s a diabetic drug that opens up yourself to accept sugar, that’s what Metformin does. It’s a diabetic drug. Why have Metformin when you can drink coffee? Have a coffee with your meal. If Tony Jr. and I go out for lunch, I have a coffee with my meal. I have a coffee with bacon and eggs if I have it in the morning. Coffee in the morning, coffee in the evening, coffee [00:13:30] at supper time. How’s that? Do you want me to sing? Okay, so it acts like Metformin. How do you like that?
Ladies, listen to this. This is a study that came out on coffee. Coffee is linked to lower body fat in women. Coffee is linked to lower body fat in women. Well you see, it’s because of that Metformin. It takes sugar and instead of storing it in the liver, it helps. Now don’t eat sugar, [00:14:00] but coffee is good to get rid of fat. It’s a fat buster. How do you like that, ladies and gentlemen? It’s a fat buster. It’s a blood sugar regulator. Oh, listen to the cancers it helps. Colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, esophageal cancer. There are studies on every one of those cancers and they are decreased [00:14:30] in people who drink coffee. Good news. Good news on International Coffee Day.
I think it was Brandy, sent me a list on Google that had coffee as an oxalate. We talked about oxalates, and oxalates can give you a kidney stones. Autistic kids have high levels of oxalates. You find oxalates [00:15:00] and vegetables. You know what? Tea has oxalates. I educated Brandy the other night. I said, “No, no. Google, it’s because they’re talking to people that have a bias.” Because it’s not true, oxalates are not in coffee. Now, if you’re drinking instant coffee there’s some oxalates in there. People ask me about that. What about instant coffee? Well, it’s not as [00:15:30] good, there’s oxalates. In tea, for my tea lovers. Okay. Now, I talked about coffee not being acidic, it’s actually alkaline once you drink it. For cancer. We talked about oxalates. We talked about lower body fat. We talked about Metformin.
By the way, let me talk about cancer and coffee for a minute. Here’s what they found, and why it is so effective in [00:16:00] cancer. It helps you to become more alkaline, one. Two, it actually increases your natural killer cells. Imagine you’re drinking coffee and you’re helping your natural killer cells to go after cancer cells. Who knew? Who knew? This is a very anticancer, that wonderful coffee bean. Our wonderful coffee bean, isn’t it wonderful? And [00:16:30] here’s another one: it helps with your microbiome. Listen, coffee helps your good bacteria flourish. Another reason to drink coffee, isn’t that wonderful? So, what did you learn today? Nothing negative about coffee.
I think it was Jeanette that asked me yesterday, if you drank too much coffee can it dehydrate you? First of all, [00:17:00] coffee doesn’t dehydrate unless you get past about four to five cups a day. A lot of people have the rule of thumb they drink one coffee and they have a bottle of water. I got no problem with that. But coffee doesn’t leech out. A dehydrating drink leaches out your minerals. Coffee doesn’t do that. Coffee is very anti-inflammatory because of its polyphenols. I know they say that sometimes, [00:17:30] like I said, if you Google it then they get WebMD or whatever, I don’t know where they put it, but it ain’t true. Now, like I said, if you drink too much coffee, you’re going to to some extent start peeing out some of your minerals. But by nature, it’s not. It’s not.
Now, remember, just remember this, coffee isn’t water. You know [00:18:00] that coffee is vitamin C, but vitamin W is different. You need both. You need both, and I know you need water to make coffee, but the water in coffee it takes a different route through your body because your body sees it as nutrition. Water is taken and put right into the river of your blood. Coffee isn’t. Coffee needs to be broken down so the body can take those polyphenols. [00:18:30] They are delivered through your bloodstream, but it’s different. It’s nutrition, really. It’s nutrition, but tremendous, tremendous effects. Did you know that if you take your coffee with your probiotics it actually helps your friendly bacteria? I love telling you this. I’m very biased, by the way, I admit it. Very biased. My wife says, “You won’t even look at a negative study on coffee.” She’s [00:19:00] probably bright, but again, Mr. Consistent. Mr. Consistent.
You can drink your coffee. Coffee will not take you out of a fast. If you’re doing intermittent fasting, coffee will not take you out of your fast, even if you put a little cream in it. I know there’s a question about that, and if you want to be a purist then don’t even take cream. But you see, the reason you do intermittent fasting, [00:19:30] and the reason I wrote the book… And I almost called it Fasting Without Fasting. I almost called that book Fasting Without Fasting because when you’re eating eggs, meat, and cheese, you’re fasting without fasting. In a purist’s eyes they’d say, “No, that’s not true.” But you see, the key to fasting is insulin. If you’re eating the right things, you’re not using insulin.
Now again, if you’re a purist, ” [00:20:00] Yeah, but you’re using a little bit [inaudible 00:20:02].” I know, I know, but look, if you want to do it… You know that, I love intermittent fasting. I’ve got no problem with it. I got no problem with it. I gave you nine reasons this morning why to drink coffee. Did you write them down? You can always review this later. Okay.
