TRANSCRIPT OF TODAY'S EPISODE
Announcer: You’re listening to The Doctor Is In podcast, brought to you by Martinclinic.com. During the episode, the doctors share a lot of information. As awesome as the info may be, it is not intended to diagnose, cure, treat, or prevent any disease. It’s strictly for informational purposes.
Dr. Martin: Well, good morning, everyone. We’re going to talk about The Plant Paradox. There’s a book out. It’s been out for a few years now. And a lot of people have asked me about two books. So I’m going to comment on them both [00:00:30] this morning. Okay. One is called The Plant Paradox and the other one is Eating for Your Blood Type. Okay. So a lot of people… And I bet you a week doesn’t go by where I don’t get asked those questions. So this morning, we’re going to talk about two books that… You know what? I always laugh because I’m a writer too. So I got books and I’ve never sold as many books as these two writers have.
I’m going to be [00:01:00] a little bit critical, but just understand they sold a lot more books. I’ve written over 20 books and I’ve never sold as many as them. They hit it big. One of them was the Eating for Your Blood Type. And like I say, it doesn’t go past a week where people are not asking me about those books. So I want to bring a little, from my point of view at least, a little clarity to these [00:01:30] two books.
And let me just say this. Whenever someone writes something in health, and they’re the only ones that write about it, I always am careful. Look, I am open to reading anything. Okay. Listen, the day you stop learning is the day you should leave the planet. Never stop learning. I want to learn every day. I am interested. And so [00:02:00] I read, and I’ll just tell you a little story about doctor D’Adamo who did the book Eating for Your Blood Type. I’ve told you this before, but I’ll say it again.
He introduced his book at the same time as me in Anaheim, California. I’m going to say 1999. And you know what, maybe that date is wrong because I can’t remember exactly. But I wrote my book on chronic fatigue syndrome, the modern woman’s curse. When I wrote that [00:02:30] book, I introduced it at Anaheim. The biggest health expo in the world is in Anaheim, California. It was canceled this year because it’s usually in March. And of course, because of COVID for the first time in, I don’t know, 40 years or whatever, they didn’t have that conference. And it’s the biggest conference. It attracts over a hundred thousand people. And this is I’m going to say 1999. [00:03:00] I’m pretty sure when I wrote that book on chronic fatigue. I’d written two or three books by that time on chronic fatigue syndrome. This was the modern woman’s curse. And I had a chance at a venue at that conference to introduce my book and in front of a big crowd, in a big audience. And it was great.
And then there was a Dr. D’Adamo. I’d never heard of him before, but he talked about eating for your blood type. And then recently [00:03:30] there has been one called The Plant Paradox by Dr. Steven Gundry, and I’ve read it. I don’t buy everything, but it was interesting. I found it interesting, but again, he’s been the only guy that sort of said it. He had a hypothesis and I respect him for it. Okay. And like I said, he’s sold a lot more books than me. So who’s [00:04:00] the dummy really. I’ve sold hundreds of thousands of books over the years, but nothing like these guys they’re into the millions. And well, good for them.
And you know what? I tell you. When you talk about these two books, read them with a little bit of a grain of salt because I appreciate some things that were said in those books, but generally, nah, the hypothesis in my opinion is [00:04:30] not a hundred percent. So let’s break them down. And number one, we’re going to talk about The Plant Paradox. So The Plant Paradox is a book about lectins. What are lectins? Lectins are proteins that bind to carbohydrates. They’re proteins that bind to carbohydrates and they are found generally, I’ll give you the list, [00:05:00] in kidney beans, in lentils, in legumes, in whole grain, soy, peanuts, corn, squash, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppers. I don’t know if that’s an exhaustive list, but that is a list.
And so what Gundry is saying is that these lectins are very hard on your gut and the human body [00:05:30] was never meant to eat them. Now I disagree with that. Okay. Now you guys know me. So I don’t have to tell you that. I think that we eat way too many plants. Look, let me back up and I’ll explain what I just said. Okay. Now listen. In the last 50 years or so, the world has gone hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo. Okay. And the reason they have done that is because it all started with the [00:06:00] fat. I should call it the fat paradox. You know what? Maybe I’m going to write a book called The Fat Paradox, not The Plant Paradox, but The Fat Paradox because the whole world, then you guys have heard this a thousand times for me, but the world went crazy about 50 years ago or so. And it was the fat makes you fat, fat gives you cholesterol, fat isn’t good for you, fat is the problem, fat’s what’s in your [00:06:30] arteries, fat is terrible and don’t eat fat. So we went fat-free.
Part of that fat-free is getting away from bacon and changing our breakfast. I talked about that and how we have gone to more instead of the animal kingdom because that’s where cholesterol is. There’s no cholesterol in the plants. So hook, line, and sinker, the world [00:07:00] went for this deception. And the deception was animal products, eggs, meat, and cheese contain cholesterol. They can’t contain fat and fat is bad for you. Cholesterol is bad for you. So there’s the history behind it. The cereal companies especially were adamant that cholesterol was at the root of heart disease, [00:07:30] and forget smoking. Cholesterol. That’s what they said.
And like I said, hook, line, and sinker medicine went for it. The world went for it. And what we saw was a huge shift, a huge paradigm shift that occurred. And you have to understand I’m an old guy. I’ve been around long time. I saw it happening. I saw it happening right before my eyeballs. [00:08:00] Have you ever seen a paradigm shift? You’ve seen it right before your eyes, guys. There’s been a huge shift in our thinking where go back to January. Was there anybody really scared of a virus? Did you ever think a virus would shut the whole stinking world down? But it did. If you would ask me in January, well, you did ask me in January about COVID, and I said, “Well, don’t worry about it. It’s [00:08:30] like the flu. We’re surrounded by pathogens.” Anyway I don’t want to get sidetracked. All I’m saying is you guys have seen even in the last four or five months a huge shift. It shows you how fast it can happen.
But in the 1960s, 60s into the early 70s, there was an anti-cholesterol war going on. [00:09:00] And cholesterol is only found in the animal kingdom. So what did you have going on? You had the plant kingdom. Am I against plants? Nope. But you had a huge intake of plants. And now it’s up. Do you know that in the last 40 years plant intake… Okay, when I talk plants, I mean fruits and vegetables, including these lectins that I just talked to you about have gone up 70%. [00:09:30] Meat, especially red meat, has gone down 30%. Plants have gone up 70%, guys, in the last 40, 50 years.
And today, I’ve talked to you about this, but I’ll repeat it, today it’s almost like a religion. It’s almost religious that people drink the Koolaid that the plant kingdom is all you need to live by. You only [00:10:00] need plants. You don’t need the animal kingdom. You shouldn’t eat anything with eyeballs. True or false? Am I right? Or am I wrong? Absolutely. This is what’s happening. And they blame it on the climate. They blame it on the environment. Cows are bad and plants are good, right? And so it’s not science. It’s religion, guys. Okay. It’s a religious type of thing [00:10:30] thinking. It’s not based on science at all. Because when you study the human body, you realize that you need both kingdoms. You need the animal kingdom and you need the plant kingdom.
Now, when I set up my reset, what do I do? I don’t even let you have plants for 30 days. No fruits, no vegetables, no nuts, no seeds, no legumes, no lentils, nothing. So Dr. Gundry [00:11:00] would like me temporarily. I tell people, “No, no, no, no, no.” And there’s a reason I do it because… Let me give you a little bit of background why I talk the way I talk. When I’m getting you away temporarily from plants, okay, fruits and vegetables, there’s a reason I do it. The biggest reason is because you do not have an enzyme [00:11:30] and this is mostly for your gut. Okay. I do it for other reasons, but I primarily do it for your gut. Most people today, most, not everybody, most people today have digestive issues. Okay. Let me repeat that. Most people today have digestive issues, not just leaky gut. We could talk about that, but it’s 80%, 90% of the population have some form of IBS, [00:12:00] irritable bowel syndrome.
And by the way, if a doctor tells you you have IBS, that’s because they don’t know why you have IBS. They just call it well, your bowel’s irritated. Well, doc, I didn’t have to come to a doctor to tell me that my gut like it’s full of gas. It’s bloating all the time and acid reflux and this and that. So listen, human beings, this is just a fact, so don’t get mad at me, human beings [00:12:30] do not have an enzyme. Okay. Are you following me? Human beings do not have an enzyme called cellulase. Okay. When you eat plants, you are eating cellulose. Okay. It’s the protection of the plant. It’s called cellulose. It is an undigestible fiber.
And listen, what happened in the seventies. This [00:13:00] happened in the seventies. So I’m just going to give you some history again. What they were saying about the animal kingdom is not only was it cholesterol, but you know what? You don’t have any fiber. Of course, that was brought to you by the cereal companies. “You have to eat our cereal in order to get fiber.” We’re not eating enough fiber. Fiber, fiber, fiber, fiber. And can I just say something. Ladies, you went for that lie hook, [00:13:30] line, and sinker. Man, I better have fiber because if I don’t have fiber, I’m not going to have a poo.
Number two, fiber, guys, is overrated. It’s not digestible. You don’t digest the fiber. It goes into the toilet. Now you might think That’s a good thing. The problem is when you don’t have cellulose, you don’t have cellulose, you do not break that [00:14:00] food down. So what happens to it? It scrubs your bowel on the way out. Problem is it takes minerals and vitamins with it. And so if you’ve listened to me, I’m not huge on fiber. I’m not saying never have fiber. I’m not saying that. I’m just telling you here’s a fact. Human beings do not have cellulase, an enzyme. And in order to really to digest the plant kingdom, you [00:14:30] need cellulase and you don’t make it. So then you have to take a digestive enzyme.
Guys, let me just say this too. If you have a good gut and your gut doesn’t bother you at all, then go for it. You want to have fiber? I don’t care. I really don’t. Except if you’re doing the reset. Okay. But I eliminate the fibers in during the reset. There’s a reason I do it. I want your gut. You know how I talk about [00:15:00] sending your pancreas on a holiday? That’s what’s happening during your metabolic reset. I’m trying to fix something, but I promise you that if you would eliminate the undigestible fibers that you’ve been eating, it’ll actually be very good for you on a temporary basis. It does because it doesn’t irritate the gut.
One thing that Dr. Gundry had right, when he talks about The Plant Paradox, he’s talking about lectins. I [00:15:30] get it. I understand where he’s coming from. I don’t agree by the way a hundred percent. I don’t. Temporarily yes, but a lot of people find out. A lot of people find out, especially you ladies. They’d love your salad. Okay. You’re not a rabbit. Rabbits make cellulase and cows make cellulase. They have it as an enzyme. You don’t [00:16:00] have that enzyme. You don’t. You don’t. Don’t pretend you do. “Oh, I’m different doc. I got that enzyme.” No, you don’t. You don’t make it. Cows have four stomachs. You got one. Rabbits make cellulase. You don’t. You don’t have that enzyme.
So that’s why a lot of people, because of this, the plant kingdom, going up to the top of the food chain [00:16:30] and the animal kingdom going down on the food chain and getting a bad rap. What happened is people are eating way too many plants. There I’ve said it. So to some extent, one thing for sure, when you’re on a 30 day reset, your gut is getting the good break that it deserves. You know what? It’s amazing, how the lining of the gut that… [00:17:00] Listen, good digestion basically comes down to two things, okay? Your microbiome, which is your bacteria and your enzymes. And this is why I’ve said it in the past that the use of antibiotics has been the greatest discovery of the 20th century, but has become the curse of the 21st century. It’s one of the reasons that we see so many… [00:17:30] What am I saying? 70%, 80%, 90% of the population today have some kind of digestive issue. [inaudible 00:17:40]
Microbiome. How does that get affected? Well, by a lot of things, we talked about this so many times, but the number one thing in the world today that affects your microbiome is antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti inflammatories like Advil and Motrin [00:18:00] and other things like that, even Tylenol. Tylenol isn’t really an antiinflammatory, but it’s a pain killer. And Tylenol affects your microbiome and so does your bad food, crappy carbohydrates and vegetable oils and artificial sugars. And you’re feeding bacteria with sugars, our stinking diet. When we got away from the animal kingdom, our sugar consumption has gone up a million [00:18:30] percent. We are consuming on average, you don’t even realize it’s somewhere around 200 pounds of sugar a year. Sugar destroys your gut because it feeds yeast.
So one is microbiome and the other one is enzymes. Those are the two things you need to have good digestion. If you don’t have good enough microbiome, and if you don’t have enough good enzymes, [00:19:00] and as we get older, we don’t even make as many enzymes. And remember, one thing, you have an enzyme that animals have that you don’t have. The animals that eat plants and live on plants have an enzyme that they produce called cellulase. You as a human being do not have that enzyme. I’m sorry. Don’t get mad at me. Get mad at God. He made you.
So all I’m [00:19:30] saying is what? Steve Gundry, Dr. Gundry, not stupid. He has a theory about lectins. I like chili with kidney beans, but I can digest that. It don’t bother me. Okay. For me, it doesn’t bother me. I don’t have that digestive issue. I find the only thing that Dr. Martin gets in terms of gut is more… If I don’t eat properly and I elevate my insulin, then I get acid reflux. I [00:20:00] know when I’m eating too many carbs, I get acid reflux. And I don’t get acid reflux as long as I don’t eat too many carbs because me and insulin don’t get along. And neither do you. You don’t get along either. Don’t pretend you do. Okay. You got a bad relationship with carbohydrates.
And many of you and I aim at the women because women love their salad. They do. And my wife loves salad. Oh. She says, “I’m [00:20:30] having a salad.” And she uses that voice on me too because I do it. “I am having a salad” because she likes it. I said, “Women, what is it about you that you like salad?” Okay. Eat year vitamin S, steak. So that’s one. Okay.
Let me talk about the other one, Eating for Your Blood Type. This was Dr. D’Adamo, not a dummy, very smart guy, smarter than me. I don’t [00:21:00] know. I think he sold 5 million books or something like that, if I’m not mistaken. See, people sort of looked at it and they said, “Oh, I’m going to eat for my blood type.” You know what? Most people don’t even know what their blood type is. They got to find out by taking a blood test. Do I like it? Nah, I don’t. And here’s what I’ve said consistently over the years. If you read this book and you try eating for your blood type and you feel very good, well, good for [00:21:30] you. Good for you. But if you’re asking me, okay, this is my show, so you’re asking me, if you’re asking me what I think of it, the book, I tell you, “Because, look, he’s got some people leading this, that or the other thing, depending on their blood type.”
Here’s what I know about your blood type. You and sugar don’t get along. I don’t care what blood type you have. And if you’re not eating steak and if you’re not eating animal [00:22:00] protein and animal fats, you are making a huge mistake. And I don’t care who you are. I don’t care who you are. You are making a big mistake. I always tell my vegetarian and vegan friends, “Can I talk you out of that? As a PhD in nutrition, can I talk you out of that?” And you know what guys, I’m not popular. I’m not popular with dietitians. I’m not popular in this modern [00:22:30] day and age where people are going for this veganism and vegetarianism and the young people movement today. I understand I’m an old guy and they think, “Oh, you’re a dinosaur, man. You got to get with the plants.” And nah, nah, you got to convince me. Because, look, guys, I’m a scientist.
Now, some people hide behind science and it ain’t science at all. But I’m just telling you, you give me a piece of steak and then you bring [00:23:00] me the best vegetable that you think you can bring to me, the best, the most nutritious one. You know what people usually pick by the way? They pick broccoli. And broccoli I’m not saying it’s not good for you although a lot of people have trouble digesting broccoli. Okay. But bring me your broccoli and I’ll bring you a piece of steak and now I’m going to compare them.
So all I’m saying with Dr. D’Adamo [00:23:30] and eating for your blood type, he put it on whatever your blood type is… He first of all is evolutionary. He believes that you got to go back to your ancestral roots and do your blood type did, what they ate for. Guys, I don’t buy that. I can’t because I just know from my clinic, not only clinicals experience, but just like guys, what’s in a steak. [00:24:00] I bring it to you every day, vitamin K2. K1’s in the broccoli. K2, which gets calcium out of your arteries, is in the steak. Vitamin A, you got to eat what five pounds of carrots to get the vitamin A that you will get in an egg. Five pounds of carrots. Why? Why is that? And then you’re going to be eating a lot of [00:24:30] cellulose with carrots. All I’m saying is you got to eat five pounds of carrots to get the same vitamin A that you get in one egg. Why is that? Because carrots, I’m not saying they’re no good. So stop. I’m not telling you not to even eat them.
I’m just telling you, you know how they always say, “Well, carrot’s for your eyes.” Yeah. But a steak is better for your eyes, and so is an egg for vitamin A. [00:25:00] And vitamin A is an invisible mask. Don’t go outside and wear a mask for COVID if you don’t eat vitamin A, the invisible mask. I have a mask on right now. You know why? Because I had my eggs this morning and I had vitamin A. Go look at the study, go look at the teaching I did on the mucosa in your mouth and in your nose and in your eyes, the mucosa. And when [00:25:30] you protect the mucosa from the COVID virus, it’s vitamin A that you need. Vitamin D too. But vitamin A.
I’m big on vitamin A. I don’t tell you necessarily to take it as a supplement. You can. I’m big on eating it. I’m big on eating vitamin A. You need five pounds of carrot for what an egg will do with you or for what steak will do for you. Why do you think I talk about that so much, right? So guys, [00:26:00] that’s why I’m just trying to get away from the fluff and the stuff that’s on the internet. God bless the internet. I like the internet. I love the fact that we can look at stuff. I love the fact that my patients, most of my patients, can I say this statement, most of you guys, whether you’re a patient or not, most of you know more about nutrition than your doctor does. I hate [00:26:30] to have to say that, but the medical schools by and large in North America are devoid of teaching of nutrition. It’s a sad thing. And they don’t look at it.
I mean, you talk to a cardiologist and they won’t talk about nutrition other than here’s what they tell you. “Well, quit eating steak. Don’t eat steak. Don’t have roast beef because you got a heart and that’s cholesterol.” That’s all they learned in medical school. They learned cholesterol is the boogeyman. So guess what they do about [00:27:00] it. And they say, “Well, if cholesterol is the boogeyman, don’t eat cholesterol.” Cholesterol is only found in the animal kingdom. That’s what’s taught in the medical schools today still, even though that’s 50 years old and it’s a pile of BS. So, guys, don’t eat for your blood type.
And let me just close with this. Let me close with this. I am so excited about my new book coming out, but I just got to tell you, okay. Eighty eight percent, 88 is [00:27:30] closer to 90 than it is to 80, isn’t it? Eighty eight percent of the population, according not to me, according to the Center for Disease Control in North America. This is the most outstanding. I don’t know how to even describe how significant this is. Eighty eight percent of the population in North America [00:28:00] is on healthy metabolically, 88%. You know what Dr. Martin thinks? It’s closer to 95. And why I love you guys is because you guys understand. And I am a very, very simple person. I am. I’m not complicated. I see things in black or white. There’s very little gray in my life.
But one thing [00:28:30] I have learned in my practice over the years is that if you cut out your crappy carbohydrates and your sugars, your metabolism, your metabolic, which is at the root of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s diabetes, and auto-immune, all five of those things, which is collapsing our health care system are affected by your diet. And [00:29:00] if you know that, and I know I’m preaching to the choir this morning, but if you understand that, then you will understand Dr. Martin. This is where I come from. This is what I believe. And I look at that 90%. And if you’re in that 90%, and as you know, many of you would understand if you’re in 90% of the population, that is you put your hand up and say, “My name is Tony. And I’m a carboholic,” if you are on that ship, [00:29:30] you’re on the Titanic and you’re in trouble. And I show you how to get off. That is my goal.
And so when people talk to me about plants only without the nutrient-dense foods of your animal kingdom, I’m 100% convinced that they’re wrong, and I’m a hundred percent convinced I’m right. And I’ve proven it to hundreds of thousands of patients over the years with my eating program. And I’m not [00:30:00] saying never eat plants. Of course, I’m not saying that. So don’t say I said it. I didn’t say it. I’m just telling you, don’t you eliminate your eggs, meat, and cheese from your diet, unless you can’t digest them. You can’t digest. I get people can’t adjust an egg. Well, don’t have it. Oh, doc, cheese. Well, cheeses and dairy. I don’t even look at it as dairy because people have given dairy a bad name. Anyway, I don’t want to get into that as much as, but you know where I come from because of that 88% to 90%. [00:30:30] And I think it’s even 95%. People are today. The world has changed. We live in a different world and we’re carboholics. That’s the biggest problem in our society today.
Hey, love you, guys. Talk to you tomorrow, Lord willing. You know what, folks? Share this. Thousands and thousands of people every day are watching this, and it’s because of you guys and sharing. And so we really appreciate that. [00:31:00] Share this as a teaching to your friends and to your family. Talk to you soon. Love you, guys.
